Marathon Petroleum Company LP’s (MPC) operations include a seven-plant refinery network with approximately 1.8 million barrels per calendar day (bpcd) of crude oil throughput capacity. MPC's seven refineries are managed as one integrated system, enhancing our flexibility in supplying markets throughout the Midwest, Northeast, East Coast, Southeast and Gulf Coast.
MPC’s refineries have different sizes and strengths. Transferring intermediate stocks between refineries and optimizing feedstock and raw material inputs also results in economies of scale that reduces capital expenditures and optimizes capacity. MPC processes a diverse slate of crude oil procured from numerous suppliers. The typical slate in 2015 consisted of about 55 percent sour crude oil and 45 percent sweet crude oil. During 2015, approximately 67 percent of this crude oil was acquired from U.S. producers, an additional 14 percent from Canada and 19 percent from other international sources.
MPC was the first U.S. refining company to adopt the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® principles across all of its organizations to address continuous improvement in health, environmental, safety and security performance. MPC is an EPA Energy STAR Partner company, demonstrating its commitment to energy efficiency.
